At the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook, older patients who are having trouble remembering things are given the opportunity to participate in music therapy sessions there.

As part of the Young at Heart concert series, attendees are taken on a musical trip that brings back fond memories of their childhood once a month.

Tom Manuel, the creator of The Jazz Loft, asserts that he has seen nonverbal individuals smiling and memorizing tunes twenty minutes into a performance. He believes that this is proof that music has the potential to heal, power, and transform.

According to a number of studies, the part of the brain that is accountable for an individual’s capacity to enjoy music is one of the few that does not deteriorate with age, despite the fact that other cognitive regions do.

Markus Riessland, an assistant professor at Stony Brook University, says that if a patient or older person with memory impairments hears the music they remember from when they were 14 or 15 years old, it floods them with memories. “If a patient or older person with memory impairments hears the music they remember from when they were 14 or 15 years old,” he says.

Even if other memories are lost, the ones that have been forgotten come back to the forefront of consciousness and take their place among the others.

Despite the fact that music is not a cure-all for memory loss conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia, the seniors who went to the performance said that it was excellent for both their brains and spirits. They also said that it was excellent for both their brains and spirits.

A fellow Smithtown resident named Joan Nappy echoed her emotions, stating, “It makes me pleased, and it makes me want to have that music around again.” The man, who was 90 years old at the time, remarked that the music being played was from his era.

The Young at Heart concert series has performances, each of which focuses on a distinct category or kind of musical style.
